Maybe they will be willing to price the service at a loss-leader price initially to build their customer base, and hope they can reduce their costs before signing up customers exhausts their cash reserves. (If they wait several years their investment in that customer may eventually pay off). So, if we suppose that the internal cost of a user terminal might currently be $2,000, then SpaceX can offer really cheap prices ONLY if they are willing to make a significant investment (short term loss) for every customer they sign up. But, his comments suggest that they are not yet near that. I know Musk wants a price of a few hundred dollars. Discussions I’ve seen suggest many experts think it will be a miracle to get the price down to less than a few thousand dollars. The dilemma SpaceX has is that Musk has said it may take them a few more years to solve the problem of making cheap user terminals. “New” was apparently the term Forbes used I don’t know how they meant it. Reuse is the reason StarLink is possible at all, and know this, starlink will make orders of magnitude more money than SpaceX does itself. However, they couldn't even be made that fast if they wanted to. Could starlink afford new stages financially? More than likely with the funding it's attracting and at-cost pricing. This pace of 2-3 launches+ per month is simply unsustainable with new first stages. SpaceX could not feasibly build first stages fast enough to launch starlink. However this launch pace is exactly why this reuse is the right thing for SpaceX and SpaceX alone right now. You know what? They're right, for them.įor SpaceX pure finances wise on the booster with R&D they might not even be breaking even yet either. As we all know ULA does not believe it financially feasible for them as the break-even point when taking into account all the extra R&D and hardware would be just far too many launches per booster to make it worth it. There has been lots of discussion about the financials of reuse.
